My Daily Makeup Routine
Updated: Mar 16, 2020
Before having a baby, makeup was something I rarely left the house without. I definitely never viewed putting on makeup as "me time" or a luxury, but now it really feels that way! These days, nothing makes me feel more put together than putting on my face (even when I'm wearing my "mom" uniform of sweatpants or leggings, and an old tank top).
I'm certainly not a beauty *expert* but I have been wearing a full face of makeup for the last 18 years or so. Lets just say I have tried a LOT of products and a TON of brands at all different qualities and price points.
My skin has evolved over the past year through my pregnancy and even more so postpartum. The only products I had to change postpartum was my primer and my cleanser. Everything else still looked great on my skin which has to say something about the quality of the product!
First and foremost, I start with a fresh and clean face. Before I wash my face, I actually prefer to use a makeup removing wipe to get a head start on removing any old makeup that is still hanging around. My favorite wipes are the e.l.f. Makeup Removing Cleansing Cloths. They have a fragrance free option if you are sensitive to products with added fragrances. These wipes are fantastic because they remove even the toughest of mascaras and are super affordable. For a facial cleanser I really love the Murad Acne Control Clarifying Cleanser. I haven't needed an acne control product since high school but my extra hormonal postpartum skin says otherwise now.
The next step is to moisturize. If my skin is being cooperative I use Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer which has SPF 30 in it. If my skin has dry patches I use my holy grail moisturizer... Clark's Botanicals Deep Moisture Mask. I do not use this as a mask. It resembles a heavy face cream, so I take a small dab and apply it to the areas that need a little extra moisture. I know this moisturizer comes with a heavy price point ($72) but the container is large and lasts forever. You can also order the small sample set for only $10 which still goes a long way and is a great way to see if you like it first. They also always have great deals around the holidays!
After I let my moisturizer set in a little, I apply a small amount of e.l.f. Beauty Shield Skin Primer, with SPF 50. Can you tell I love skin products with SPF in them? This is a "universal tint" primer, but it does not really do much for me tint wise. It mainly provides a smooth surface to apply foundation.
Using a slightly damp beauty blender I apply Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Foundation in the shade "fair sand", and Tarte Shape Tape Concealer in the shade "fair". I love both of these products because they are super easy to blend and provide a good amount of coverage. If you are looking for an amazing concealer to conceal ANYTHING I definitely recommend this Shape Tape concealer! Great for my dark circles and concealing any blemishes (#newmomlife). While the concealer and foundation are still somewhat wet, I take a large powder brush and lightly apply the Tarte Smooth Operator Tinted Pressed Finishing Powder over my whole face and blend into my neck.
If I am going for a natural or "no makeup" look I use Hikari Cream Pigment in Honeydew on my eyelids. It has a bit of shimmer and really just brightens up my eyes. If I want a little bit more color, I always use eyeshadow palettes from Too Faced. Best eyeshadow palettes, ever. Hands down. They smell amazing, and the shades are easy to apply and blend. I love their palettes because they usually range from neutrals to really vibrant colors. My two favorites are the Too Faced Chocolate Bon Bons Eyeshadow Palette and the Too Faced Chocolate Bar Eyeshadow Palette.
Next up... eyebrows! If I only do one thing before I leave the house it is going to be my eyebrows. My eyebrows are microbladed but I still like to darken them with additional product. My all time favorite is Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow in soft brown. Since becoming a stay at home mom I've been on much more of a budget and I've found a really good dupe is the e.l.f. Eyebrow Kit in medium. You can get four of those for less than the price of one Anastasia Dipbrow which is pretty amazing! For either of these products a really nice angled eyebrow brush is going to make all the difference. I replace my eyebrow brush every few months to make sure it is still crisp which really helps make the "tail" of the eyebrow look clean.
After adding eyeshadow I apply eyeliner and mascara. I feel like these two products can really make or break your look. For eyeliner I swear by Tarte Sex Kitten Liquid Eyeliner. It is the size and shape of a pen with a felt tip for super easy application. Even if I'm in a rush, I still manage to get perfectly crisp and symmetrical eyeliner. If I'm going for a more natural look, I skip the eyeliner all together and go straight for the mascara. My top two mascaras of all time are Tarte Maneater Mascara and Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara. Tarte Maneater is a great everyday mascara and if I want a little more of a statement lash, Too Faced Better Than Sex gives it just a little more drama.
This next step is my favorite part and probably my favorite beauty product of all time. Seraphine Botanicals Daisy + Pearl Natural Radiance Booster. I already mentioned this product in my holiday gift guide but it really is as if they took the best blush in the world and combined it with the best highlighter in the world. It leaves you with a perfect, healthy glow. It can be worn subtly or built up for a bolder look. If I want a little more highlight, I add Morphe Highlighter in Spark. After all of these steps, I take my large powder brush and blend out my face and neck a bit. For a finishing touch, I use Tarte Color Splash Lipstick in the shade Salt Lyfe. It is the perfect combination of a nude and a mauve lipstick with a really smooth, easy to apply texture. If I want something with a little more moisture, I use the Tarte Quench Lip Rescue in Rose. I love that it moisturizes and has a tiny hint of color, as well as a really fresh mint smell.
All of the beauty products I featured in this post are easily available on my beauty list on Amazon as well as many, many more of my all time favorites!
